iPhone firmware, blackra1n is released
blackra1n is a utility that jailbreaks version 3.1.2 of the iPhone OS. It achieves this by patching the firmware of the device "on the fly" - meaning it edits the firmware located on the device whilst in DFU (recovery) mode. It allows users to install either Cydia, Icy (Cancelled in RC3), Rock, or all three. This allows the user access to tweaks, homebrew applications, and the root directory and file system. Blackra1n can also tether jailbreak the iPod Touch 3G and the iPhone 3GS with the updated bootrom. The developer George Hotz has stated on his twitter that he has no plans to create an untethered version for the iPod touch 3G and updated iPhone 3GS.
Notes:
- BlackRa1n does not unlock your iPhone so that it can be used with another carrier.
- If you have already updated to 3.1 or higher and you did not use PwangeTool to upgrade from an earlier iPhone OS version, then you will not be able to unlock your iPhone until PwangeTool is updated.
- iPod Touch third-generation users take heed–Blackra1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. If your battery is depleted after the hack, then you will have to reconnect your iPod Touch to a computer and use the Blackra1n utility to reboot it.
